About

RESEARCH-LED. TRANSPARENT BY DESIGN.

Better information for expensive outdoor decisions.

Big Game Ledger is an independent digital publication focused on western big-game gear, hunt planning, mapping tools, and adventure costs. Our goal is simple: help readers understand the tradeoffs before they commit time or money.

Our initial coverage centers on elk and mule deer hunting in the American West. We organize information from primary sources, manufacturers, experienced hunters, guides, land managers, and other qualified contributors—then clearly identify what is verified, what is expert opinion, and what remains uncertain.

Why Big Game Ledger exists

  • Gear decisions are easier when weight, cost, intended use, limitations, and alternatives are compared in one place.
  • Hunt plans are stronger when regulations, access, terrain, logistics, safety, and realistic budgets are considered together.
  • Readers deserve to know whether a conclusion comes from research, expert review, or genuine hands-on use.

About the founder

Big Game Ledger was founded by a U.S. military veteran who has hunted for most of his life, primarily in Georgia. That experience built a deep appreciation for preparation, wildlife, conservation, and the land that makes hunting possible.

He is also a wildlife and landscape photographer who enjoys documenting animals, terrain, and moments before, during, and after hunts. Photography brings patience, observation, and respect for detail to the way Big Game Ledger researches and presents information.

How we work

Big Game Ledger is research-led. We prefer current primary sources for regulations, access, product specifications, and other facts that can change. Important dates, prices, laws, and availability are rechecked before publication whenever they are material to a decision.

Although the founder brings lifelong hunting and outdoor experience, Big Game Ledger does not claim firsthand experience with every species, state, or western hunt covered. We do not present online research, AI-assisted drafting, outdoor recreation experience, or product familiarity as firsthand authority. When practical experience matters, we seek review from people with relevant, verifiable experience and identify their role.

Products are not described as field tested unless they were actually used in relevant conditions. Outfitters, destinations, and services are not endorsed without sufficient evidence. Commercial relationships never replace disclosure or determine our conclusions.

Our standards

Read our Editorial Policy for sourcing, corrections, contributor standards, and content labels. Our Review Methodology explains how we separate desk research, expert input, and hands-on use. Any commission relationship is addressed in the Affiliate Disclosure.
