Editorial Policy

Big Game Ledger is a research-led publication built to help readers make better-informed decisions about gear, hunts, maps, and planning.

Experience disclosure: Big Game Ledger’s founder is new to big-game hunting. The site will not present research, outdoor recreation, product familiarity, or AI-assisted drafting as firsthand big-game hunting experience.

Our promise

  • We identify the type of evidence behind important claims.
  • We prefer current primary sources for regulations, access, safety, wildlife management, and other time-sensitive information.
  • We distinguish research from expert review and firsthand experience.
  • We disclose affiliate relationships and other material incentives.
  • We correct substantive errors and display review dates where currency matters.
  • We do not manufacture expertise, field results, quotes, photographs, or product testing.

Content labels

LabelWhat it means
Research GuideBuilt from identified sources and clearly stated inference. It is not presented as firsthand hunting experience.
Expert ReviewedReviewed for material accuracy by an identified person with relevant, verifiable experience or professional qualifications.
Field TestedUsed in stated conditions for a stated period, with the test method, limitations, and tester identified.
First LookInitial inspection or short-term use. It is not a full review or durability conclusion.
Buyer GuideA comparison using disclosed selection criteria, sources, testing status, and commercial relationships.
OpinionCommentary or judgment clearly separated from reported fact.

An article may carry more than one label. For example, a Research Guide may later add Expert Reviewed status without becoming Field Tested.

Source standards

For legal requirements, application rules, draw systems, closures, land access, travel designations, weather hazards, fire information, and wildlife disease, we begin with the responsible government agency, land manager, landowner, or other controlling authority.

  • Time-sensitive facts include a source year or review date where practical.
  • Calculations preserve the source data and assumptions.
  • Secondary sources link back to their supporting evidence when available.
  • Forums and social posts may generate questions but do not serve as final authority for consequential claims.
  • Uncertainty, conflicting evidence, and missing information are stated rather than hidden.

Expert review and contributors

Content requiring practical big-game judgment will remain unpublished or clearly limited until it has been reviewed by experienced hunters or relevant specialists. A reviewer’s role and relevant background will be disclosed. Review is not a blanket endorsement of the site or every statement it publishes.

Contributors must distinguish direct observation from memory, opinion, secondhand information, and inference. Exact hunting locations, private access, sensitive wildlife areas, and confidential information will be protected.

Gear reviews and product recommendations

  • A product is not called “reviewed” merely because specifications were researched.
  • Testing claims state who tested the item, where appropriate, for how long, and under what relevant conditions.
  • Short use does not support long-term durability claims.
  • Manufacturer specifications are attributed and separated from measured results.
  • Free products, loans, sponsorships, discounts, and affiliate commissions are disclosed.
  • Commercial relationships do not permit a partner to preapprove conclusions.

For more information, read the Affiliate Disclosure.

Images, maps, and artificial intelligence

  • Original field photography is preferred.
  • Manufacturer, contributor, government, and licensed media are used only with appropriate permission, terms, and attribution.
  • Map screenshots and annotations must respect provider terms, sensitive locations, private information, and access relationships.
  • AI-generated imagery will not be used to portray a real hunt, animal encounter, product test, location, or documentary field condition.
  • If an artificial or illustrative visual is ever useful for an abstract concept, it will be clearly labeled and used sparingly.
  • AI may assist with outlining, organization, or copy editing, but it is not treated as a factual source or evidence of experience.

Safety and legal limitations

Big Game Ledger provides general educational information. It does not replace current regulations, hunter education, landowner permission, agency direction, qualified medical care, professional instruction, or the judgment required in changing field conditions.

Readers are responsible for verifying the current rules, access, conditions, equipment, and training required for their exact activity and location. When an article addresses consequential safety or legal information, it should link readers to the responsible authority.

Corrections and updates

  • Substantive corrections are made promptly after verification.
  • Time-sensitive guides receive visible review dates.
  • Expired or unreliable links are corrected or removed.
  • Material changes to a conclusion are explained when practical.
  • Readers can report an error through the Contact page or by emailing hello@biggameledger.com.
